Grapefruit seed extract

« Back to Glossary Index

Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) is a natural substance derived from the seeds, pulp, and white membranes of grapefruit. Known for its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and preservative properties, it is commonly used in skincare, dietary supplements, and natural cleaning products. Rich in bioflavonoids and polyphenols, GSE helps protect the skin from oxidative stress, supports wound healing, and has been studied for its potential antibacterial and antifungal benefits. In skincare, it is often included in formulations to help soothe irritation, combat acne-causing bacteria, and extend the shelf life of products. While generally considered safe in diluted concentrations, concerns have been raised about some commercial extracts containing synthetic preservatives. For this reason, high-quality, pure sources of grapefruit seed extract are preferred in natural formulations.

Grapefruit seed extract (GSE), also known as citrus seed extract, is a liquid extract derived from the seeds, pulp, and white membranes of grapefruit. GSE is prepared by grinding the grapefruit seed and juiceless pulp, then mixing with glycerin. Commercially available GSEs sold to consumers are made from the seed, pulp, and glycerin blended together. GSE is sold as a dietary supplement and is used in cosmetics.
